COMIC STRIP
was the most expensive of 71 yearlings sold by his sire Red Ransom in 1996.
Comic Strip looked the part as a $300,000 yearling and proved that the
selection of a superior pedigreed, good looking individual is a great plus
when it is time to go to the races. As a two year old Comic Strip was able
to win a 5 ½ furlong maiden race at Belmont Park and a 1 1/16 mile allowance
race at Churchill Downs. In his next 18 starts at 3 and 4 he recorded 8
wins, 5 seconds and 3 thirds. In short he seldom ever ran poorly in his
entire life. His race record shows that he could run short or long, on the
dirt or on the grass, and over any racetrack. He was in the Triple Crown
picture when he won the Louisiana Derby thus demonstrating he was one of the
best dirt horses in America. As a 4 year old, Comic Strip demonstrated his
versatility by winning turf stakes at various tracks including Saratoga.
Half of his ten wins came in stakes races as did half of his six second
place finishes. To that add three third place finishes in stakes races and
you have a true consistent top class graded stakes competitor.
Comic Strip represents a new trend
in stallion management whereby a a stallion is co-owned and stands his first
few years at stud in a few different markets. California is the beneficiary
of this trend with this first class stallion prospect who will stand his
third years and fourth years at stud on America’s west coast.
Comic Strip is a son of Red Ransom
the Saratoga track record setter at 5 furlongs in 56 1/5 seconds and highly
successful stallion who has sired stakes horses of great variety of stakes
winners. It seems that Red Ransom is capable of producing quality horses
from a vast variety of bloodlines and accomplish task without the necessity
in a great many cases of inbreeding.

The breeding of Comic Strip
which is Red Ransom out of a Saratoga Six mare out of a Creme dela Creme
mare enables mare owners the continued variety of Red Ransom himself. This
ability to mate mares with a great variety of pedigrees easily to Comic
Strip is a quality that is getting more difficult in this day and age. When
doing a mating with Comic Strip there is no need for the mare owners to
worry about traps like inbreeding to Mr. Prospector or other patterns that
offer poor results.
The soundness, versatility,
precociousness and pedigree quality of Comic Strip is just what the
Thoroughbred Industry needs at this time. There is no need to worry about
unsoundness, or inbreeding to that detrimental characteristic, which is
currently a trend and is reducing the ability of the American racehorse to
stand training over several seasons.
On April 10, 2003, Comic Strip had his first winner
in a Maiden Special Weights race in New York at 4 1/2 furlongs at Aqueduct.
Cash Buttons came from off the pace to win the race which carried a purse of
$41,000. Cash Buttons is out of a His Majesty mare named Hard Core
which proves that the old Darby Dan Farm cross of Roberto and His
Majesty is alive and well. The Dosage information on Cash Buttons is
DP = 0-1-22-1-2 DI = 0.86 CD = -0.15 all of which just goes to
show how difficult it is to figure out the horse business.
Comic Strip now ranks near the top among the
leading freshman sires of 2003.
