RACE RECORD:
I could make a strong case that Greenwood Lake was
the best two year old of his year. In five starts at two, he won three
including the prestigious Champagne Stakes-G1 at Belmont defeating Chief
Seattle, High Yield and More Than Ready and others by two and a half
lengths. His other victories came in the his maiden win at Saratoga
and in the important Remsen Stakes-G2 at Aqueduct. He was second in
the Futurity Stakes-G1 defeating More Than Ready and Chief Seattle in that
race as well. He was third in his other start as a two year old while
earning $418,620 as a juvenile.
PEDIGREE:
The female family of Greenwood
Lake traces back to the fantastic Champion Racemare Gallorette, winner 21
races including the Brooklyn Handicap, Metropolitan Handicap and Whitney
Stakes over males and the Acorn Stakes, Delaware Oaks, and Beldame Stakes.
The third dam Mlle. Lorette is also a stakes winner capturing the Gallorette
Stakes during her racing days. The second dam is the stakes placed
Lorgnette and the first dam is Au Printemps, a stakes winner as well.
This is the female family of
recent Grade One stakes winner Whitmore's Conn, hero of the Sword Dancer
Stakes-G1 at Saratoga in 2003 and of Californian Stakes-G2 winner Mud Route.
Misty Galore, Dancing Moss, Minstrella, White Gloves, Air Express, Wonder
Kind, and Lovin' Lass are just some of the more noted stakes winners that
descend from the foundation mare Gallorette.
As a producing mare Au Printemps
has proven to be the strongest branch of the Gallorette family tree.
In addition to to Greenwood Lake, she has also produced Canadian Champion
Charley Barley and Breeders' Cup Juvenile-G1 winner Success Express.
Additionally she is the dam of Bittersweet Hour, a Seattle Slew mare that is
the dam of two stakes winners.
BREEDING SUGGESTIONS:
The Dosage information
on Greenwood Lake is as follows:
Dosage Profile =
8-6-8-2-0 Dosage Index = 3.00
Center of Distribution= 0.83
His Average Winning
Distance is = 8.17
Looking
at the female family and the pedigree overall, it would seem that many
things word work well although I would stay away from the Hail to Reason
line since there is no evidence that inbreeding to Nothirdchance is
worthwhile. Inbreeding to Gallorette has produced a stake horse or so,
but nothing distinguished. There has been some success throughout the
world crossing The Minstrel with Nijinsky II to create an inbreed to Flaming
Page. It would seem that the bloodline of Minstrel would suit Greenwood Lake
well genetically and physically.
Greenwood Lake is arguably the
best quality male produced by his sire Meadowlake. Greenwood Lake is
five generation free from inbreeding, something that is very handy in this
day and age. Of the 24 most noted of the 48 stakes winner sired by
Meadowlake, a pattern of success seems best achieved inbreeding to Native
Dancer and Raise a Native. Meadow Star (inbred 4x3 Native Dancer), Siberian
Meadow (inbred 3x4 Raise a Native), Luftikus (inbred 3x4 Raise a Native),
Inside the Beltway (inbred 3x4 Raise a Native), Bonita Meadow (inbred 3x4
Raise a Native), Spring Meadow (inbred 3x4 Raise a Native), and Silent Lake
(inbred 3x4 Raise a Native). It would seem that inbreeding to Prince
John is also okay.
One case that is surely
important, is the selection of the soundness factor which so many stallions
require these days. It always seem a good idea in dealing with the
Meadowlake bloodline to introduce soundness. Also since Meadowlake and
Greenwood Lake are substantial horses, the selection of smaller mares
that tend to produce medium size foals would be desirable. We all know
that nothing is certain in the breeding business but these suggestions would
seem to improve the chances of getting a high quality runner from this great
two year racehorse. |
